The past tense!

 

Lenite the root! (add an ‘h’)

N.B…     Dh’ +vowel root verb (= dh’ith)

Dh’ + f root verb, lenited (= dh’fh-)

l/n/r –root verbs don’t change spelling, but do change pronunciation

sg/sm/sp/st –root verbs don’t change at all

Add a noun/pronoun afterwards.

 

Negative = Cha do + past verb

 

Question =  An do + past verb..?

Answer Yes = Past verb

Answer No = Cha do + past verb

Gabh                     ghabh mi             take

Leugh                    leugh mi               read

Fàg                         dh’fhàg mi          leave

Ith                          dh’ith mi              eat

Òl                            dh’òl mi                drink

Suidh                     shuidh mi            sit

Ruith                     ruith mi                                run

Nigh                       nigh mi                 was

Sgriòbh                 sgriòbh mi           write

Obraich                                dh’obraich          work

Irregular Verbs:

An deach thu? = Did you go?

Chaidh mi = I went (high)

Cha deach = I didn’t go

Chaidh mi a-mach = I went out

 

Bha mi a’glandadh.          I was cleaning

Ghlan mi                              I cleaned

Bha mi ag’òl                        I was drinking

Òl!                                          Drink

Dh’òl mi                               I drank

 

An do leugh thu pàipear a raoir?

An do dh’èirich thu trath an diugh?

An do ghlan thu an taigh a raoir?

An do dh’fhàg thu an taigh aig ochd an diugh?

An do dh’ith thu tost airson bracaist an diugh?

An do leugh  thu pàipear an dèidh dinnear a raoir?

An do ghabh thu deoch laidir a raoir?

An do choisich thu an seo an diugh?

An do dh’òl thu?                              Dh’òl. / Cha do dh’òl.

An do ghlan thu an taigh?

An do dh’èirich thu trath?

 

Ghlan mi an car.

Ghabh mi aran.

Leugh mi leabhair.

Dh’fhàag mi an taigh.

Dh’ith mi aran.

Dh’òl mi uisge beatha

Dh’fhuirich e ann an Canada.
